PAD Day 26: "I'm nobody, who are you" by Emily Dickinson

PAD Day 26:

Ah, I knew I still had one last poem-song in me... and ending with Emily Dickinson feels like a wonderful closure to the PAD challenge: writing 12 songs was so much more than anything I hoped for. More poem-songs next year, perhaps... many thanks for your support:)

PAD Day 12

Attempting to set chapter 68 of “Rayuela” to ranchera music could mean several things: you are delirious and/or you need a rest (I swear it sounded swell). This poet-musician is taking the weekend off... more compositions next week, perhaps. Meanwhile, here are my favorite songs of this week and a half of enthusiastic creation:

PAD DAY 10: "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T. S. Eliot

PAD Day 10

Ever wondered how T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” would sound if it was sung? Now you can find out:) (True, Eliot won the first round and I had to adapt the original text... but the match is still on, this is just my first version.)

PAD Day 9: "Les Chats" par Charles Baudelaire

PAD Día 9: “Cats” by Charles Baudelaire

Ah, well. I should start with a heartfelt apology to all my French-speaking friends for butchering their language... My good friend Edith asked me to set Baudelaire’s poem to music and friendship is well worth the rattling death of a language. Anyway, composing and recording Baudelaire’s poem was so much fun:)

Here is the poem...

PAD Día 9: “Los gatos” de Charles Baudelaire

Bueno.

PAD: Day 8

Today I bring, for all you football fans and mothers out there, one of the most touching and pithy poems I’ve ever read: “Soccer”, by Blanca Varela. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Estrella Morente performed it? (Poetry, by the way, is everywhere. While I was recording the poem—and I think for the first time since Spring began—a bunch of kids went out to play soccer on the grass, in front of my apartment, and I managed to record their laughs and incorporate them into the song:)

PAD Day 7: "Digging" by Seamus Heaney

A week after beginning the PAD challenge I'm alive and, funnily enough, still composing. I'm so very happy to bring you this poem today, one of my favorites in the English language.

PAD: Day 7

A poet like Seamus Heaney needs no introduction, really. Enjoy the music:)

PAD Día 6: "El Bosco" de Rafael Alberti

PAD: Día 6

With a little help from my friends, gracias al desafío genial de Paco Puerto y la dirección artística de Daniel Ares-López, hoy os traigo el escatológicamente exuberante “El Bosco”, de Rafael Alberti, que describe ese cuadro alucinante de Hieronymus Bosch, “El jardín de las delicias”.

PAD: Day 6

With a little help from my friends, thanks to Paco Puerto’s brilliant challenge and Daniel Ares-López’s artistic direction, I bring you the scatologically exuberant “El Bosco”, by Rafael Alberti, which describes Hieronymus Bosch’s mind-blowing painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights”. (The literature scholar in me can’t help point out how, in the English version of the title, the adjective “earthly” binds interpretation and underlines that those delights are never transcendental...).

So, springtime means it’s time for PAD: the Poetry a Day Challenge. Come on, join the fun:) I’ve always been a rebel so I want to up the ante: I’m going to set to music in/famous poems, record them and post them on my blog. I know, it's probably wishful thinking on my part, but I’ll try. Right now it seems feasible because I already have a two song head start—that’s probably illegal right? Any suggestions in English, Spanish or YOUR OWN poems are more than welcome... not all poems work but I promise to give each and every one a try. Today’s poem, still raging on in every Spanish-speaker’s mind after four centuries is Francisco de Quevedo’s sonnet “Love Constant Beyond Death”.

-----
